What are the internal dimensions of a 20ft container?
If you are looking to store your items with us then internal dimensions are probably more useful to you to ensure that there is enough space for your contents. The internal dimensions of a 20ft container are 19ft 4” long x 7ft 9” wide, with a height of 7ft 10”. In metres this translates to 5.82m long x 2.36m wide, with a height of 2.39m.
What will fit in a 20ft container?
20ft containers can store a very large volume of items. They have a cubic capacity of 33m3. The floor footprint is very large so you will be able to get a large amount of items into the container. If you are efficient with your stacking then it can make a big difference but be careful not to damage or crush any of your items. In reality it is hard to use every inch of a container, especially the space above shoulder height. This means that the actual usable volume for storage is much smaller than 33m3 due to inefficiencies with packing items and lost space. Remember not many items can be stacked up to 2.39 meters. Even if you have boxes it is unlikely you will be able to stack them very high due to the weight on the bottom box and potential reach limitations when stacking items.
Container Storage tips
Furniture can be stacked carefully and on its ends to reduce its footprint on the floor. Lighter items like cushions can be stacked on top of heavier items. You will also need to consider if you will need access to any of your items during the storage period. You can either leave these items at the front of the container or leave a passageway to the side of the container making sure that any items that will need to come out will fit down this channel.
Another tip to work out what will fit in the container is to measure out the footprint of the items you want to store take up. For example a chest of drawers might take up 3ft x 2ft of floor space. You can then work out how much space your items will take up. You could take this one step further and mark out the size of the container with tape on the floor and see what will fit in. You might have to do this in 2 x 10ft areas as not many rooms are 20ft long.
One major benefit of container storage is how accessible they are. All our Plymouth based units are drive up containers, this means you can unload your van/car straight into the container instead of loading it into trollies and taking it into lifts for internal storage units.
Is a 20ft container too big?
If you don’t have much to store then we offer 8ft containers which are much shorter. They are also around half the price of a 20ft container. Some of our customers rent 2 x 8ft containers instead of one 20ft container because it makes it easier to sort and organise your items having more front access.
